Traditional surrogacy
A traditional surrogate serves as both a gestational surrogate
and an egg donor simultaneously. This means she donates her egg as well as her uterus for a couple in need. Couples who suffer from both an egg factor (diminished ovarian reserve) and a uterine factor (see gestational surrogacy) may prefer traditional surrogacy over egg donation/gestational surrogacy. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is simply inseminated (IUI) with the intended father's sperm when she is ovulating at mid-cycle. Advantages over egg donation/gestational surrogacy include affordability, ease, and decreased likelihood of multiple gestations.
At the California Center for Reproductive Health, prospective traditional surrogates are screened carefully prior to qualifying as both an egg donor and a surrogate, to ensure the well-being of the pregnancy and a successful outcome.
