Ovulation induction
Ovulation induction is performed in patients who fail to ovulate
(release an egg) on a regular basis. Ovulatory women will normally
ovulate a single egg in each menstrual cycle. Anovulatory women, on
the other hand, often have disordered or no ovulation. There are
many different causes for anovulation, and it is imperative to
determine the cause prior to treatment. Once a diagnosis is made,
ovulation induction can be performed with a variety of treatment
protocols, ranging from orally ingested medications (like Clomid,
Tamoxifen, Femara.), or injectable medications (recombinant or
urinary-derived gonadotropin hormones). Ovulation induction may also
be combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI) if a couple is also
diagnosed with male factor or cervical factor infertility.
